ORONGO VILLAGE
DIGNITY PROJECTS
When the floods come,
dignity
shouldn't wash away.

The soil of the Kano Plains of Kisumu is
"Black Cotton"—clay that swells and traps water.
Every rainy season, the Nyando River bursts it banks.
Long rain seasons have brought a time of death, destruction and misery. When the floods come, the semi-permanent houses of residents fill with flood water and toilets collapse. Nearly 100 families must move to relatively safer places like Orongo Missions Center to share very little space. Often months pass before families can move back to reclaim their heavily damaged homes. Most villagers live on generational land and are unable to move out of the village. So each year, they must endure a health crisis.
